SNES Classic Release Date
That speculation — that only intensified after rumors out of E3 2017 indicated a brand new Classic device was arriving — has now been confirmed. Nintendo of America took to Twitter today to announce that the SNES Classic was in creation, and also that the machine could be accessible on September 29, 2017 with a price tag of $79.99 USD ($99.99 CAD).
Although details are still forthcoming, it looks like the new device will come complete with 2 throwback SNES controllers, even alongside a ton of amazing games. From the packaging of the device we can confirm that strikes like Super Mario World, Star Fox 2, Donkey Kong Country, and more will be just some of the titles that the emulator will be able to run. The tweet also confirmed Earthbound, a SNES classic that has been incredibly difficult for collector’s to locate, and has been reproduced in downloadable form on the much-maligned Wii U — much more access for this particular iconic item of gaming history can only be a fantastic thing.
What the tweet doesn’t mention is whether the SNES Vintage will be hard to find as its predecessor. Nintendo has made no sign that it plans to stray from the business model it’s used for both the NES Classic and the Switch, each of which exploded in popularity and saw supply quickly don’t meet demand. Still, if Nintendo has learned anything in the NES Classic release, it should be these devices have incredible global appeal, and an endless run of their machines will no doubt lead to the kind of profit most businesses could only dream of.
